Why is airfare so expensive?

I was looking for flights from Los Angeles to London, in sept of next year, and noticed that the airfare is throw the roof? I understand that during the summer time prices tend to go up, but it doesn’t make sense that tickets are 1,300 round-trip around Sept. Don’t understand what’s going on, help?

If you haven’t flown for a while – welcome to the 21st century….
Airplanes use lots of fuel to cross the ocean. With current oil prices it costs them a lot more to operate the flight than before.

The good news is – you’ve got plenty of time ahead of you (oh, and in recent month or so oil prices did drop a bit, so keep your fingers crossed).

Airlines are known to fluctuate the fares quite a bit, and between now and september you may be able to grab a great deal. The trick is to check your favorite travel site for fares every day. Sometimes they would drop the fares for one day only, sometimes even for a few hours.

Another good news – there are plenty of flights from LAX to LHR, so competition is good. Which means if one discount airline comes up with a low fare on sale for a few days, chances are one or more major airlines will match that. They regularly do. So keep your eyes open, and keep checking.

Also check out nearby dates. Flying during the week (Tuesday – Thursday) can save you a hundred or two. But the main thing is – keep on checking. With all the time you’ve got at your disposal you should be able to grab a fare of under or just over $1000, unless something major happens in the world that would send the fares up or down steeply, which is also not unheard of.

Good luck,
LEM.
