Arab B2b Takes New Direction in North America

The New York Times conducted an interview with Ms. Janine Jaouni, Director of Business Solutions, an entrepreneurial e-commerce figure in the Middle East; the interview was part of a research and collaborative efforts by Microsoft, Google and eBay to explore markets in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) for introduction of new product lines and services. According to Ms. Jaouni, the e-commerce environment in the Middle East and North Africa faces several obstacles which deprived consumers in the region from commodities which [surprisingly] they can afford.

“The major issue is lack of a free market economy, companies are encouraged to export, yet customs and red-tape are a trade mark of most Arab economies, perhaps with the exception of the Emirates.” Ms. Jaouni continues: “the population of MENA stands at approximately a quarter-billion people, yet the economic boundaries have defeated the purpose when it comes to creating economies of scale.”

Microsoft, Google and eBay realize that MENA is an untapped consumer environment, yet the challenge remains on how to make such fragmented demands make economic sense, after all, the American business model is based on centralized operations of scale, particularly when it comes to the services sector, the challenge is the many borders, each with its own set and often contradictory rules of doing business.

Ms. Jaouni points out that her company Business Solutions has identified three challenges. The first challenge is lack of infrastructure for transportation and speedy delivery and reliable mail services; the second is lack of credit (less than 2% of the population of MENA has credit cards, 5% of those in her estimates have PayPal accounts), and the third is lack of trust – this is due to the fact that prosecuting someone in a different country is very difficult, particularly for consumer size transactions. Ms. Jaouni discounts the challenge of the centralized business model; “the web and e-commerce in particular lend themselves to a decentralized model,” she adds.

Then, how do you do e-business in the Middle East and North Africa, isn’t that what you do?, we asked.

Many young Arab entrepreneurs have realized that they can setup simple e-commerce (business-to-customer, B2C) sites catering to European and American customers. The nature of the products ranges from souvenirs to specialty or traditional items. These businesses, while profitable, require extensive marketing and dedication, something which is not easy to do for a part-time entrepreneur. Ms. Jaouni states: “Our approach and company philosophy is different; we help these and others setup a network of Business-to-Business (B2B), and from there B2C, thus creating a web of tiered network referred to as B2B2C.”

Business Solutions realized the potential of B2B marketing and produced its first EXPO package in 2003. This B2B package is designed for export oriented markets and includes categorized listings of businesses, each business with online catalogs, inquiry baskets, PDF brochures and utilities to export spreadsheets for large scale marketing campaigns. EXPO is most suitable for markets with specialized product sectors, like in Jordan, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Syria and Morocco. The platform has significantly contributed to exports of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, marble and stone, leather products, textiles and furniture.

Based on the success of EXPO, the company launched the Arab Travel Network (ATN) in 2005. ATN is a site totally administered by travel agents, tour operators and companies which provide related travel and tourism services. For businesses, it functions as a B2B platform creating a travel and tourism marketplace in an area long ignored by Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz. Tour operators are now capable of organizing tours and selling packages to travel agents world-wide. Travel agents in turn offer travel packages to customers, also online, a very successful B2B2C model. The major tourism sectors benefited by this package are in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Ms. Jaouni states that Business Solutions has also experimented with hotel reservations and other services related to Hajj and Omra in Saudi Arabia, and is currently looking for local partnership and representation. The Emirates market also has great potential, but requires a unique model which Business Solutions is looking into.

The latest release by Business Solutions is ArabCityUSA.com which is a super-portal targeting the Arab Community in North America. The planned release of ArabCityUSA.com was postponed by six months in order to re-design the site to make full use of the latest AJAX technology. This technology enables vendors and users alike to get results effectively without having to “mine” for information. The site is focused on travel services with airfares and packed offers, and online airfare quotes system to many airports in Arab countries and world-wide destinations. The portal has a comprehensive list of restaurants offering Middle Eastern and traditional Arabic (particularly Lebanese and Moroccan) cuisine, where each restaurant self publishes specialties and menus which appear in a compiled easy to browse pages. The site also offers a comprehensive business directory with categorized listings and online catalogs for products and services. In addition to AJAX, the site utilizes US zip codes to calculate distance to such businesses and sorts results by distance. The site has a social platform which offers a meeting place similar to MySpace.com; among the innovative features is Skype.com online status for members and statistics about who is online using IP-to-Country detection technology. Ms. Jaouni adds that the target Arab communities in the US are primarily in Paterson and Jersey City in New Jersey, New York City, Boston, Baltimore, Washington DC, Houston, Dearborn, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and San Francisco. All services offered through ArabCityUSA.com are free, except for the advertisements, preferred and featured listings.

The future of e-business in the MENA region remains promising, evident by the high number of internet users. “Somehow we need to turn browsing time into a shopping experience”, Ms. Jaouni comments, “I see people taking shopping trips to London, Paris and New York; we need to make the same products available here for the middle-class, it is all products they can afford.”

Airfare Complaints

What Airline Mergers Mean to Travelers

The following are several potential threats to travelers as a result of airline consolidation, according to the U.S. General Accounting Office, a non-partisan research service:

  • Less meaningful competition in select markets
  • Greater likelihood of travel disruptions because of labor or financial crises
  • Reduced service in specific communities
  • Additional barriers making it more difficult for new airlines to enter markets

Three major domestic airlines were completely taken over by their merger partners in the last decade: TWA by American, America West by US Airways and Northwest by Delta.  In all three mergers certain cities lost service, with other cities having reduced flight frequency and nonstop service being dropped in many instances.

As to the airline claims that mergers increase efficiency, any improvements due to mergers appear to be of short duration and recent history shows that for whatever reason eventually the less punctual partner (in terms of on time performance) exerts the greater influence.  Similarly the partner with the poorest customer service skills (as evidenced by customer complaints) appears to negatively influence the merged airline. In other words, generally, on time performance decreases and customer complaints increase after a merger, opposite of what the carriers claim.

History shows that when one airline dominates a route where previously it competed with a merger partner, ticket prices often increase, sometimes by a significant amount. It only makes good business sense for the carriers to take advantage of the less competitive situation they find themselves in once a merger has been completed.

Airfare Questions:

Where can I find a good airfare/hotel combo package for a trip to NYC?

I have checked many common known sites (expedia, hotwire, priceline, etc) but I’ve read alot of complaints about people paying on such sites and then arriving to find out that their hotel room is not booked. Can someone who uses these sites or any sites like these on a regular basis give me some info?

You can check expedia.com but when I looked for cheap airfare they were more expensive than AAA.com…

I got real good ticket prices from AAA.com – check them out– I am sure you will like the prices you get– You have to be a member.

Good luck and hope you enjoy ur trip…

Happy Traveling!!!!!!!! :) :)

Anything you prepay for- you can call ahead and make sure everything was booked properly cuz once its booked you own the tickets- it takes only 10 mins and you can assure you wont not have a hotel when you arrive.

Stick to well advertised sites if you dont chose AAA… Good Luck!

Hawaiian Travel Guide: Kaua’I Preparations

Its four distinct geographical regions are the main reason for the Magic you will experience when vacationing on the Island of Kaua’i's 550 square miles.  Kaua’i’s western side is the site of what is possibly the most beautiful stretch of coastline in all of Hawaii, the Na Pali Coast.  Kaua’i’s North Shore has all the mesmerizing beaches, emerald mountains, tumbling waterfalls and rainbow-spanned vistas you would expect
to find on Hawaiian vacation brochures.

The island’s South Shore as the sunny weather and unspoiled beaches which attract most of its visitors, and is the home of the Po’i’Pu Resort.  Finally, Kaua’i’s East Side is where you find its commercial and residential heart, its government offices, and its largest city, Kapa’a.

You will enjoy your visit Kaua’i much more if you time it to suit your taste in activities.  If you are planning to spend your days enjoying its magnificent beaches, be aware that the huge surf off its North Shore can make those beaches un-swimmable during the winter months, while it is South Shore gets big waves during the summer.  Your best opportunities for whale watching occurring February, although some whale show up as early as December, and some remain until April.

The Island’s Kalalau Trail may be off-limits following winter rains, and you can forget along the Na Pali coast during the winter months.  Almost all of Kaua’i’s western shore attractions, in fact, are available only during the dry season.  At least busiest seasons are between mid-June in early September, and from mid-December to early April.  You will pay more for your accommodations during those months, and you will also pay a price in crowded hotels, and congested roads and beaches.

One thing remains the same year round on the island of Kaua’i is its temperature, at an average of a delightful 78 degrees Fahrenheit.  Kaua’i is coolest in the early morning and late evening, and swimmers can expect water temperatures of between 74 and 80°.  Vacationing on Kaua’i during the rainy season between December and March can be disappointing unless you restrict your travels to its southern and western areas.  The biggest advantage of enjoying Kaua’i during the rainy season is that you will experience its plant life and waterfalls at their most spectacular.

Packing for your trip to Kauai will require some care.  Make sure to include a sunscreen or sunblock which is both waterproof and has an SPF rating of at least 25, to protect you from the strong beach sun.  Also include UV, protective sunglasses, and a camera with either lots of memory, or plenty of rolls of film.  Light clothing is fine all year long, but make sure you have protection from the rain if you are traveling during the winter.

Get a map which guides you not only to the islands important tourist areas, but one that will help you find it off-the-main-drag attractions.  If you plan to hike in its outlying areas, bring plenty of water because you cannot rely on the safety of its streams.  You will need sturdy hiking boots, insect repellent, and whatever water sports equipment will let you take advantage of all the beach-related activities on this marvelous island escape!

A Country Within A Country: Travel To Barcelona

The distinctive regional culture of Barcelona is largely due to geography and a plentitude of national pride and elitism. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, one of Spain’s 17 semi-autonomous states. The regional language is Catalan, along with the national language of Castilian Spanish. There has long been pressure from the Catalonian government and nationalists to earn complete autonomy from Spain. Consequently, the exclusive culture can be difficult to adjust to and there is significant animosity towards foreigners around the main tourist street of Las Ramblas. To thoroughly enjoy the sweet life and gentle hospitality of Barcelona, leave this busy area and explore the many diverse districts, endless with possibility.

Café Life and Nightlife for the Night Owl

Barcelona is truly a city that never sleeps, particularly during the warm Mediterranean summers. Avoid standing out like a sore thumb by eating dinner when the locals do: after 10 p.m. It is common to see children, grandparents and the family dog gathering at the outdoor cafes at these hours when the day’s work is finished and time for friends and family has commenced. Since Barcelona hosted the Olympics in 1992, the city has been revamped with visitor friendly attractions such as the massive Olympic Village, a string of swanky restaurants, state-of-the-art nightclubs and boutiques along the beach. Most nightclubs do not get going until after 1 a.m. and club-goers typically wander out onto the beach around 5:30 to watch the sunrise over the Mediterranean.

A Modernista Mecca

The architectural wonders of Barcelona will keep even the most novice eye bewildered and intrigued. Antoni Gaudi decorated Barcelona with his treasures of modernism as a painter on a canvas. The grand boulevard of Passeig de Gracia is lined with elaborately adorned Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, both with the most intricate rooftops known to modern architecture. Arguably the most stunning of Gaudi’s work is the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. Each of the church’s facades are meticulously designed with different themes and styles combining nature with religion and the soaring towers topped with mosaic grapes are built around a conch-like coiled staircase that visitors may choose to take instead of the elevator. Another tribute to Barcelona’s artistic heritage is the Palau da la Musica Catalana. A view of the glass and mosaic inverted chandelier on the ceiling of the theater is alone worth the visit. Daily tours are offered in addition to the regularly held musical performances. Afterward, get lost in the tiny twisting passages of the surrounding historic Gothic Quarter.

Traveling Barcelona Right Not Your Weekend Visit

It is best to avoid traveling to Spain in August, when most of the locals (and most of Mediterranean Europe) take their vacations. Chances are that the restaurant you wanted to visit will be closed and museums will have extremely curtailed hours. August can also be uncomfortably hot.

Barcelona should be traveled with care and patience. The only disappointment visitors have is the inability to see all of the city’s landmarks and hidden corners in a realistic amount of time.

Exploring Nyc Could Be A Challenge If You Don’t Know Where To Start

Where to Start?

Start your sightseeing tour of New York by visiting the Statue of Liberty that stands as a shining example of America’s freedom struggle in the 18th century.  Continue your tour of New York City and visit the Chrysler Building, Citi Group Centre, Rockefeller Plaza & the Empire State Building that highlight America’s economic and technological superiority. A trip to the city’s museums would be a learning experience as they offer unique insights into American history, art and culture. Being the nerve centre of entertainment in contemporary American society, New York is   home to some of the finest symphonies, rock bands and jazz ensembles. Its performance spaces like the Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Bowery Ballroom are second to none and witness performances from some of the most talented artists from all over the world.

Give sightseeing a break. Try Retail Therapy!

Thinking of some shopping?  New York will not disappoint you. It’s shopping spaces like the Fifth Avenue, SOHO and China Town offer incredible options for those who want to shop and splurge to their heart’s extent. Do visit the famed Times Square, a major intersection in Manhattan that is famous the world over for its animated digital advertisements and offers limitless shopping options.

NYC – A gourmet’s Delight

New York’s cosmopolitan identity ensures that it is a melting point of cuisines from all across the world. Few places in the world offer such an incredible variety of food and wines as does the city of New York. A tour of its restaurants, fast food joints, snack food outlets and delis would be similar to a culinary tour of the world.

Visit New York today and you will realize that it is, without a doubt, one of the best cities in the world to spend a fun-filled holiday.

Tips to book air tickets to New York

If you intend to travel to New York on a shoe-string budget then the best option is to search for air tickets to New York on the web. Some tourists spend a lot of time jumping from one website to another in search of the cheapest fare and end up wasting a lot of time and ultimately get confused. The best way to get the cheapest fare is to sign up for fare alerts on any travel portal and grab air tickets as soon as the fare dips to the level you desire.

Another problem while booking your air tickets to New York from a travel portal is that many times you get a non-changeable, non-refundable ticket which you will not be able to cancel or modify if need be. Buying tickets from a travel agent would be a better idea as you can book a ticket that can be modified and cancelled as per your convenience.

Good Luck on your trip!

Air Travel

How to de-stress air travel

Any one knows of a safe budget air travel from Saigon to Cambodia?

All the other budget air travel that I know – like pacific air, air aisa, jetstar – do not ply the Saigon-Phnom Penh route. But I think there should be one somewhere. I hope somebody can help me with this info, and how much are return flights. Thanks.

I believe your only choices are Vietnam Airlines and Siem Reap Airlines, and neither of them are cheap, probably at least $250US or so round trip. I live in Thailand and it’s the same situation here, Bangkok Airways and Siem Reap Airlines are the only airlines that fly into Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and they’re both very expensive, too. And if you think that’s expensive, try pricing flights from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Air Asia is planning a Vietnamese subsidiary, but whether that helps with prices into Cambodia remains to be seen, I doubt it. Hopefully some airline will open up some cheaper fares on these routes, but for now, you don’t have much choice. Good luck.
