A Prison Home to Hollywood and Ghosts Alike
The Shawshank Redemption is widely considered to be one of the best films of all time. While it was critically and commercially overshadowed in its year of release by Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction, the film has steadily gained popularity over time and in a readers’ poll of Empire magazine last year, it was voted the best film of all time. While the prison used in the film has also acted as a set location for other productions, such as Air Force One and music videos by Godsmack and Lil’ Wayne, its main function now is as a tourist attraction.
The Mansfield Reformatory, also known as the Ohio State Reformatory, was built in the 1880s in Mansfield, Ohio. It is one of the largest castle-like structures in the USA, comprising over 250,000 square feet and combines Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque, and Queen Anne architectural styles. This might seem unusual for a correctional facility, and with reason – the original architect, Levi T. Scofield, designed the facility to encourage the inmates away from a sinful life and towards repentance.
The prison remained fully operational until 1972 and was completely closed down in 1990. Having gone through considerable deterioration since opening, The Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society was formed in 1995 in an effort to restore the facility to its original state, funding restorations through donations and tour fees.
Several tour operators such as Hampton Landmarks offer tours of the Mansfield Reformatory throughout the summer, starting around Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) until the end of September, with tickets being sold on a first-come, first-serve basis from the box office. A general tour of the building is offered during the week, and on weekends visitors have a choice of three tours, where they can either see the prison cemetery and observe the underground tunnel system, see the Catholic chapel above the central guard room and get an insight into the living quarters, or of course, see set locations from The Shawshank Redemption, including the prison warden’s office, the parole board room and Andy Dufresne’s escape tunnel.
Over 200 people died at the Mansfield Reformatory, including a few guards who were killed during escape attempts. The Mansfield Reformatory is therefore supposedly haunted with several paranormal “hotspots” such as the two chapels, the infirmary, the area around the warden’s office and solitary confinement.
At night, adults aged 21 or over can take part in Ghost Walks (starting from 7:30 to 8pm, lasting roughly two hours) and unguided Ghost Hunts (7:30pm to 6am). Guests are allowed to leave at any time, but for security reasons may not re-enter. These generally sell out very quickly, so customers should book tickets well in advance. In October the prison also offers a Halloween-themed Haunted Prison experience from 7pm for 3 to 5 hours, depending on the day of the week, available to people aged 13 and over. Tickets for the Halloween night are available in advance or at the box office.
So if you’re looking to pay homage to one of your favourite films, looking to meet ghosts or simply looking for a holiday experience slightly out of the ordinary, make the trip to the Mansfield Reformatory.

Top Deals & Destinations of the Week!
I would usually put this one last – but it is so good, I have to make sure all eyes see it. If anyone has tried to travel over the holidays, you know the prices can double/triple during our days off! However, Funjet is offering flights from $199, yes $199 roundtrip to the Caribbean during the Holiday season – and that is just the beginning of these amazing deals. Yes, I’m a total Caribbean bum. The warm salty air, the miles and miles of sand that give way to some of the most gorgeous turquoise water anywhere is enough motivation than I need. That image coupled with the fact that its now cheaper then ever before to go, makes the Caribbean the bonus destination this week! Fly into the Caribbean and stay for 3 nights during this Holiday Sale for $429 and you save $570 per person! You say you want added value? Alright, how about bring the kiddies along and they will stay, play and eat free! You have to love the Holidays!
Now that I got the holiday excitement out of the way, here are the best deals and destinations of the week!
Hawaii. Although this might sound like an automatic for most people, it must fall on any list of places to go. Comprised of hundreds of islands spread over 1500 miles, the state of Hawaii has been a sod after spot for families, honeymooners and everyone else looking to enjoy its acclimate weather and its lush beaches, not to mention their bewildering gold, red, green and black sands. With breast cancer awareness month upon us, you can battle two issues with one preverbal stone. You can visit the amazing island of Oahu for 5 nights including air for $939, while helping out a very important cause. The “Travel Pink, Travel Oahu” makes donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Travel during this time will save you close to $200; as oppose to traveling there during the high season.
Australia. Fall asleep on the plan and wake up in this beautiful and diverse English speaking country With its over 2.9 million square miles of land, this country is filled with history, underwater treasures and, for the nature lover, some of the most amazing creatures to ever roam the wild. If you’re a wine lover, or one that occasionally enjoys a nice glass, Australia, with its average temperature of 67F (19C), has some of the world’s best Chardonnay. Take a journey through the extraordinary history and architecture of the Iconic Sydney Opera House. With dimensions of 605 feet long and about 388 feet wide, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has held some of the most sought after venues in the world. Constructed in 3 stages, this structure holds 5 different venues that make up the main performance facilities; The Concert Hall, The Opera Theatre, The Drama Theatre, The Playhouse and the Studio. If Australia is your idea of a true getaway, and with all there is to experience you are not alone, then take advantage of this terrific offer. Air and a 6 night stay, with a tour of this amazing attraction is yours for $1999. This rate is for travel from Los Angeles, usually with advertising if you are traveling from any where but the place they give you the price for, the price goes way up – but in this case, the reason this deal is so amazing and much more affordable than in the past, is because there is only a $150 flight add-on regardless of where your origin in the United States!
Affordable Cruising w/ Low Deposits. With the dollar these days, a lot of our dreams of visiting exotic destinations like Europe/South America/Alaska may be put off for years later, “when things get better”. However, the cruise lines are very aware of our economic situation and are making our way around the Globe more affordable. Princess Cruises, one of the most respected names in the Cruise industry has is offering rates as low as $146/nt. Pick a place on the globe, Denmark, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Alaska and my personal favorite St. Petersburg, Russia are all well within your reach. Princess is offering a worldwide sale including coupon booklets for the cruise that will certainly save you money on board. The best part is if you want to plan ahead and reserve the space for 2009 plus take advantage of the deep discounts now, you only have to give a $100 deposit. If you have not cruised before, I can tell you the deposits are usually much higher! Plus they guarantee these low prices – so you don’t have to think that the price may get lower later. Many of the sailings are offering cabin upgrades and other amenities. A new look at an old way of spending your vacation is what you might be looking for, and Princess Cruises makes your search a little less congested.
Jamaica. As Jack Frost is getting ready to nip on your nose, what better way to fight back then heading to the Caribbean? The need for Hot Chocolate as an anti-freeze is absolutely not needed here; and proper footwear while on the beach is no required. I have been to Jamaica six times- I guess I like it there. Lately, I hear some negative talk, fear in some cities – however these are not the places the tourists frequent and the myths should be squashed. Jamaica has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen, and truly gives you that “island, I am way from it all” feeling. Jamaica is known for its all inclusives, where you never have to leave the resort except for a dip in the ocean and perhaps an excursion to hear some reggae. The deals to Jamaica – especially these all inclusive resorts are outstanding. One deal I found with Air Jamaica Vacations is with The Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort. Relax to the sounds of Calypso music for 3 magical nights at the All-Inclusive Montego Bay resort. That’s right; everything is included for your vacation. Not convinced yet of this great deal…well, how about round trip airfare, two checked bags free (can you believe that they are charging to your luggage!), transfers and use of land and water sports and entertainment. Also, flying Air Jamaica has been one of the best airline experiences I have ever had. Got kids? Bring them along with you. Not only do you save up to a whopping 60% off, your kids get to stay free! I’m sure that Mr. Frost will be waiting for you when you get back, but nothing like prolonging the inevitable!
Fiji. Yes the South Pacific has been on my table of places to go for quite some time now. I have found deals to this side of the world, I never thought could exist. Go to sleep on the plane – wake up in paradise. The Republic of the Fiji Islands is an island nation in the South Pacific. East of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and Tuvalu to the south, it occupies about 322 islands. One spot in Fiji that I have paid close attention too is Nadi. The third largest conurbation in Fiji, it is located on the western side of the main island. The scuba, snorkeling is outstanding — the color of the water is like no other, and the culture, interesting and colorful – yes, you are really on the other side of the world. You can take ferries to the Mamanuca Group of islands along with experiencing the mud-flat beaches. Other exciting sites to take in are the Waqadra Botanical Gardens and the Sleeping Giant Gardens, which house Raymond Burr’s magnificent orchid collection. If Europe and Hawaii have become the everyday talk as to where your vacation travels will lead you, this might be a nice change; and with prices starting at $999 per person including air to Nadi, you can start telling your friends “I’m finally going to the South Pacific!”

Buy Tickets Airline
When is the best time to purchase airline tickets?
I’m going to be traveling to Munich anywhere from mid April to early May and would like to know when the best time would be to purchase tickets. Thanks for helping!
Normally it’s best to buy well in advance, a month or more before you plan to fly. However, these days it seems there are a lot of great fares out there, some advance purchase tickets and some last minute. There are some great fares being offered now for travel to Europe and the time you’re planning to go is considered off-peak. Start checking the discount websites as well as the airline websites and if you see a great fare go ahead and purchase it. Buying a ticket is always a slight gamble, ticket prices may come down, but more often than not they go up the closer you get to your date of departure.

How do you diagnose swine flu and what is the accuracy of the diagnosis?
I am a bit astounded that doctors in minor clinics in Nova Scotia can claim to have diagnosed swine flu in four high-school students. Are they using some form of test like the HIV western blot, or are they just looking at these people weezing and in light of the present hysteria, saying OH MY GOD! SWINE FLU!

London-Istanbul
Sometime this week
Round trip
Staying there for around 2 weeks
You can try Turkish Airlines’ website:
http://www.thy.com/en-UK/index.aspx
There’s only a few days left of this week and from what I see, there are two international airports for Istanbul (IST and SAW).
You can also try Opodo:
http://www.opodo.co.uk/opodo/flights/flights
The second website from what I can see, Adria Airways would be the cheapest at £299.60 GBP if you depart Saturday at Gatwick at 9:45 a.m., arriving at Atatürk at 16:55 p.m. and it appears to have 1 left and has 1 stopover in Ljubljana and to return from Atatürk to Gatwick with also a stopiver in Ljubljana and currently 4 seats left. It would leave Atatürk at 5:40 a.m. to arrive at Gatwick at 8:45 a.m..
If leaving Sunday, you can take Air France for £278.30 GBP as the cheapest to return on the 15th of April (Thursday) with 1 stopover either in Paris or Amsterdam.
Maybe try different dates for returning and you may get lucky so try whatever come up as cheapest after trying different dates to return.
I tried for a return Thursday and Friday and it came up as £277.90 GBP for both dates with Czech Airlines with a stopover in Prague. Tuesday appears to be more (£294.70 GBP). That is leaving England on same day Sunday. You could try Saturday if you want, too. Hopefully you get it cheaper than that and try the SAW airport, too see if anything comes up and if so, then see if it’s any cheaper.
Good luck and hope this helps.
Scoring Cheap Tickets To Colombia Or South America
Everybody, at one time or another, dreams of jetting down to some destination down in the Southern Hemisphere, if only for once in their lives. With the drop in worldwide travel lately, the expense of doing so has abated, too. These conditions can make scoring cheap tickets to Colombia or South America more possible than ever.
Why fly down to South America at all? With oil dropping in price all the time, jet fuel isn’t nearly as expensive as it once was, so the price of a tickets gone down. Also, airlines are looking to fill seats wherever possible, so you can probably put together a good trip to Brazil or Argentina, for example. And then, while you’re there, stop in and see Peru or Ecuador on top of it.
Cheap tickets are all over the place. As travel demand has dropped, the chances of being able to put together a nice travel package to all those countries down in South America are greater than ever. Just take a little care to plan the trip far enough out in advance, and you should be able to wing it pretty cheaply.
Planning is the activity to pay the most attention to. Going anywhere down in South America requires a bit of sensible planning. A lot of travel agencies exist to do most of the work for you, though. And if you don’t want to search for tickets yourself, they’ll be happy to do it for you. Of course, you pay them a commission for doing it.
Make maximum use of the Internet. Before we had such a thing as the Worldwide Web, it was harder to find out which airlines had cheap tickets to sell, but no longer. Today, you can get an inside view on the price of just about any ticket at any time going any place, including for all those destinations, like Colombia, down in South America.
Limber up to be as flexible as you can. Many times, the cheapest fares are gotten by flying very early in the travel day. “Red eye” flights out of a destination can be significantly less than when you travel later in the day. Keep that in mind when you’re booking a flight.
Tuesdays through Thursdays are the days to fly. A lot of empty seats are sitting in an airline’s midweek inventory. If you can arrange to travel on those days, you’ll be able to find a cheaper price on a ticket to most any destination. Remember; an empty seat makes an airline no money at all.
Plan everything out when it comes to traveling on the cheap. Almost any destination at the moment can be cheaper to get to. Plan wisely, and that South American or Colombian or Brazilian trip won’t end up costing you an arm or a leg. Remember that you’ve got the power to see far in advance what a ticket will cost you, which will then allow you to get the best, and cheapest, price.
