But for Ms. Scarlet the Wiccan, dealing with the spirits is part of her life. “I believe in the afterlife,” she says, “and that is a part of my daily life. The spirits are always with me. As they are with all of us.”
She adds, “Ghosts have felt the need to reveal themselves to me since I was four. My first visitation was from a great aunt. I didn’t realize she was a ghost until I told my mom about the lady in my room. My mom gathered up the old photo albums and asked me to show her who it was. The lady I selected was my great aunt who had passed three days before I was born.”
“I wear a black dress, black cape and top hat. It is not simply part and parcel of an entertaining night out with someone wearing late 19th century attire. Black is traditionally worn to protect from evil spirits. So this getup actually has a purpose, no matter where a ghost tour is.”
This is not your ordinary ghost tour. It is more like taking the first class in a the course of How a Wizard Deals with the Spirits of the Night. More importantly she has fun on the tour, as a result, so do the guests – particularly the children. They are fascinated by Ms Scarlet’s collection of amulets, charms, incense and stones along with diving rods and a laser thermometer, which she uses to find and bring out the spirits of the Netherworld. The adults like her total style.
The night I went on the tour, there was a group of ten adults, half of whom were on it for the third time. “The tour can vary from night to night,” says our tour guide. “What I cover depends on the curiosity and questions of the crowd. “
“Usually the tour ends outside of two haunted, 100 year-old mansions,” says Alison, one of the third-time participants, “but tonight, because we have repeated the tour, Ms Scarlet walked a little farther to the site of the Cooley Massacre. “
“This incident, by a group of renegade Seminoles killing a wife, her three kids and their tutor, execution style,” adds Ms Scarlet, “started the Second Seminole War for which President Jackson had a fort built nearby called Fort Lauderdale. It is this area of land, next to the fork of the New River, where our city began and how we got our name.
“The spirits of the Indians, and the early Spanish and American settlers still linger. There are a few sightings of early and mid-20th century ghosts, but otherwise we have gotten lots of readings in this neighborhood and photos of many orbs.”
In a group of eight participants, there were five children from three to 12 years old. It was the latter’s birthday. “They were a lot of fun” says Ms. Scarlet, “and I made the night special for the kids. I took dye-cut goody bags with a pattern of roses, hearts, and stars and put a few items in each one — a glow-in-the-dark eye bouncy ball, a package of popcorn that turns orange when you pop it, an “energy stone” and each girl got a chocolate-covered granola bar. I told the girls if they put three push lights in their bags, the bag would cast shapes on their walls!” What made the tour special for the birthday girl is the guide brought her a cape and battery-operated candle so that she could be her assistant and guest guide. You could see the thrill in her eyes.
All the party girls were into the ghost tour. An 11 year old told me she wanted to be a ghost hunter and a medium so that people could talk to their dead family members. What an unusual profession for an 11 year old to want. Then the birthday girl added in that she has seen ghosts before. She said she saw her Dad! The six year old then chimed in that she didn’t see her Dad but she felt him!!!!!

Tahiti, Fiji, or Hawaii for honeymoon?
We want to go someplace tropical with decent beaches and good snorkeling. I have been to Hawaii (the Big Island and Kauai) so we’d probably go to Kauai and maybe split the trip and visit Maui as well. We live in Washington state so flying to Hawaii would be super cheap. Never been to the French Polynesian islands but heard they are beautiful. In your opinion, are the French Polynesian Islands worth the extra thousands of dollars in airfare? Are Kauai and Maui really similar to the French Polynesian Islands? I want to feel safe and feel as stress-free as possible. I really like the idea of jet skiing and swimming with sting rays on our honeymoon (I’ve heard these activities are both possible in the FP islands but not so much in Hawaii) but it might be worth it to forgo those activities if we are able to save a few thousand $ if the FP islands are indeed very similar to the Hawaiian islands that I mentioned. Any thoughts? Where would you go?
Hawaii? Fiji or Tahiti? That’s a good problem to have. 
First off, you should know that if a place says they cater to honeymooners – that’s a big red flag. For better or worse, French Polynesia caters to honeymoooners, so expect to pay $20 for your coffee and croissant in the morning. Also, if you’re not comfortable with sharks you may want to cross Tahiti / Bora-Bora off your list. I think sharks are cool, but not everyone does and they’re everywhere in French Polynesia. Lastly, there are parts of Tahiti (Papete especially) that can be not-so-safe for tourists. If you go there, stay at your resort.
As for Fiji – its beautiful. Of the three places you listed, it has the best snorkeling – lots of soft corals and anthias (colorful fish) that you won’t see in Hawaii. In fact, if you’re looking to just lie on the beach, go to a spa, and play in the ocean – Fiji is a great choice. That said, it won’t have as much variety as Hawaii.
If it were me, I’d go to Hawaii. Like you said it’s cheap from Washington and you can fly direct. In fact, if you sign up for Alaska Airlines’ credit card, your significant other can fly for only $99. Also you don’t have to worry about currency fluctuations like you would in Fiji or French Polynesia. Hawaii isn’t like French Polynesia so much but it IS a tropical paradise – in fact, it’s the most isolated place on earth. One third of the underwater life isn’t found anywhere else on the planet.
In Kauai I’d recommend a boat trip down the Napali coast. As for snorkeling, Kauai isn’t known for having great visibility – but for sure you’ll see turtles. If you’re interested in snorkeling on Kauai, call Josh at Kauai Down Under, he knows all the best spots. You could also ask about doing a discover scuba experience. With the scuba experience you get to try the gear first and get comfortable before going in the ocean. You”ll never forget your first breath underwater, it’s amazing! If you want to try scuba on Maui, I recommend Maui Dreams.
You could jet-ski in either place. If you want to go big and see Manta Rays, those are pretty much guaranteed if you go to Kona (The Big Island). The Manta Ray experience is on the official list of 100 things to do before you die – it’s freakin’ amazing.

I am taking my wife to Ireland in October to celebrate our 10th anniversary. I am doing research on the country but need help regarding best way to see Ireland (guided tour, self drive, etc.) and if bed and breakfasts are the way to go or if its worth it to spring for a couple of nights in a castle. I will be in country about 7 days. We plan on seeing Dublin, Kerry, Waterford, and County Cork for sure. any recommendations? How expensive will it be? weather in Oct? anybody know of nay great bargains/deals. My total budget is about 3,000$ USD, including airfare from houston. Am I dreaming or is it doable? I would appreciate greatly ANY info anybody may be able to provide. THANKS!
To be honest, I’d suggest self-drive. You set your own pace and go where YOU want to go. It’s not that hard to drive on the left.
I thought about castles, but the nice ones are VERY expensive.
We had really nice luck with B&Bs.
Ireland is fairly expensive. However, it’s beautiful and the people are friendly.
The weather will likely be cool and possibly damp. Dress in layers.
Airfare (coach) will run around $700 per person.

Wanted to visit a recently married old friend now living in Shanghai. I will be in Taiwan for a few weeks and was wondering what my best options are. Cross-strait flights are not an option since they only operate on weekends. What would be the cheapest option? Taipei-HK-Shanghai? Or should I connect through Macau, Seoul, or Okinawa? Those are the only options I know of. Time and budget are limited so I’m looking for a cheap yet fairly fast option (no Taiwan to HK and then train to Shanghai, for example).
