Fox Business: Where To Find Those Great Travel Deals with Tom Parsons
Is it too early for me to book a flight (for this June) to Europe? If I wait, will the prices go down or up?
I’ve heard conflicting reports — some industry people say if you wait another month or two before booking your flight, the airfare prices may drop, b/c right now it’s kind of early for the airlines to predict how business is going to be… And other industry people say that summer prices are all fundamentally the same, and the longer you wait, the more you’ll be paying. What do you guys think?
I’m working on that dilema too (do it EVERY year).
No, it’s not too early to buy now, and prices could go either way.
I would advise, if you find a fare for your dates to your location (barring GB), under 1000usd it may be a good idea to go for it. If you’re flexible with your dates, and/or location, keep shopping a few more weeks and hope for some sales or fare changes.
Personally, Febuary is the latest I would wait. I am hoping summer fares will adjust in our favor immediately after the new year, if they don’t, we just have to hope for a lucky sale.
If you are comfortable traveling, and a bit on the adventerous side, you may want to consider check flights to the UK and connecting independantly on budget carriers like easyjet or Ryan air. (I’ve saved hundreds going that rout).
Good luck

Please help me determine the cost of this! 10pts?
My friends and I are going to Europe for a vacation. We plan to fly to Athens, Greece and then fly to sicily. We’ll spend a few days there then we’ll fly to Rome and drive to Venice. THEN we’ll fly to Paris and then fly to Spain. Afterwards we’ll fly to England near the Harry Potter thingy and then fly to Iceland. Then we will finally fly back home to Dallas, Tx. I need help determining the price of the airfare, the cheapest hotel in each place, and the cost of a rental car for each place! Can I take my car on the back of a plane-would that be cheaper? If you could list where we should go and when as well as where we will stay you will ABSOLUTELY get the 10pts. Because we plan on doing this in a two month time period because we don’t know how long we should stay at each place. We want to stay longer at Sicily, Italy! Thank you for your help.
SRATCH that we’ll be going everywhere EXCEPT Iceland. So we would go from England to Dallas, Tx. Thanks.
So, you work out your inter continental flights (home to Athens, and England to Dallas) you’ll have to be more specific on the sites, using Expedia or one of those sites. Then you check easyjet or ryanair or one of those European discount airlines (or all of them) for the intra European flights.
Wait! CAR? You want to rent a car? HOW OLD ARE YOU GUYS??? Don’t rent a car. Period! And don’t even BEGIN to think about transporting a car ANYWHERE! No. You can’t put a car on the back of a plane! Where on EARTH did you get THAT idea?
No cars. take a train on the one short trip that you have planned.
DO not think about taking the trains all over. I mean, you could check them out, and you could do a pass, but I’m guessing your airfare thing is less expensive, and a lot more time effective.
Figure out what sort of housing you want to use.
If it’s Youth Hostels, use this site…I think you can even book the nights online.
http://www.international-youth-hostels.com/
so, you can figure out the costs, or even book your rooms that way, or you can just wing it, and when you get into town, drop your backpack in the first hotel/pension/hostel/inn that strikes your fancy and has a room.
Next, you want to check how much the sights you want to see will run you. ‘
Check a couple of places for how much food is likely to cost you.
Add whatever you think you will spend on souvenirs (then double that number – because it’s bound to cost you much more than you think it will).
Add everything together, and add about ten percent, because you KNOW you’ll be off by at least that much. Then, if you are not going for another year, add another ten percent for inflation, and hope the dollar goes up!
This way, you have a decently close budget.

Where can I find the cheapest plane tickets to France?
I am flying to France in February, 2007. Does any one know where to find the cheapest plane tickets on any air line?
I don’t know of any where by heart or off the top of my mind–but I do suggest doing a search online. Call a few places in the phone book, as well… or even go through a travel agency. To go straight to France it might be costly, but chances are, if you don’t mind taking detours or smaller plane rides here and there, the cost goes down. When I went to Japan, the flight was cheaper, because we went to Calgary, Vancouver, then Tokyo. Hope that helps a little.

Should I go to Egypt?
Ok my best friend & I just found this amazing deal to go to Egypt in Feb.(we love to travel) for less than $2000 – includes airfare, cruise, hotel, food, transportation & two excursions. Thing is my boyfriend & I are planning to get married next year but don’t have a set date yet? (he’s leaving me hanging w/ that) Do you think it’s wise to go to Egypt even though I’m planning to get married sometime next year? Think it’ll be worth it? When I asked my boyfriend about it he got a little attitude and just simply said I can’t tell you what to do and thinks the money spent on Egypt can be saved toward wedding or put toward my little credit card debt. What ya’ll think, do think I’ll be unfair toward my boyfriend if I just decided to take advantage of a deal like that?

China vacations info – Urumqi travel info
This article is about the Urumqi travel and you can find some useful information in it if you are planning your Urumqi travel now.
Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in an alluvial fan-shaped basin on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains. The city opens on to the Junggar Basin in the north. In the Mongolian language, Urumqi means “Beautiful Meadow.”
To get here, you can take the plane and this trip is about 5 hours (from Shanghai to Urumqi). The airfare is not cheap: 2850 rmb for one way if you are not able to get some discount. (info for your China travel and vacations)
If this is your first time to Urumqi, you will find that it is very different as what you thought. Actually, Urumqi is very similar as other big cities of China (like Beijing, Shanghai, etc). You can find nice pubs, bars, shopping malls, supermarkets and all kinds of modern things here.
One thing you will need to pay attention in Urumqi is the time difference. Urumqi is in the very west of China but there is only one time zone in China – Beijing time zone. This makes the office hours here a little bit weird: people start to work at 10:30, have lunch on 14:00, sleep on 2:00. Pretty interesting,
We all know that there are several time zones in the U.S. , the American people don’t have this kind of bother but there will be some other confusions too in U.S. because of using different time zones.(helpful info for your China vacations and tours)
In Urumqi, you can find lots of delicious food. The most famous ones here are: Xinjiang BBQ, Dapanji Chicken, Shouzhuafan Rice. I like the Xinjiang BBQ very much. (cost 2-3 rmb for one tring) The Shouzhuafan Rice is also called the “hand-fed dinner”. You can try this unique dinner if you like.
Dapanji Chicken has another name – “Big-plate chicken” … a big plate is about 15″ in diameter and is enough for 8 people! Chicken, potatoes, medium chillies, garlic and usually onions in a really fragrant sauce with star anise and Sichuan Pepper. (useful info for your China vacations and trips)
Here in Urumqi, the flavours are slightly different and the dish has more onion, but still with the principal spicing of chilli, Sichuan pepper, and, most importantly, Star anise. Less chilli oil as a base, so the sauce is less red in colour. At Urumqi, they will serve the dapanji on a bed of “nang” bread like this, if you wish. The bread soaks up the sauce and is exceedingly “more-ish”.
Hongshan:
Ongshan Mountain is the highest spot in the center of the city. Hongshan’s main peak is 464 meters above sea level. With towering crags, the mountain was named after the cliffs, which gleam red in the sun’s rays every morning and evening. The upper part of the mountain looks like the head of a tiger, so it is also called “Tiger Head Mountain.” It faces Yamalike Mountain, less than 1,000 meters away. At the foot of the mountain is the Urumqi River, flowing from north to south. On the top of Hongshan Mountain is a statue of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) national hero Lin Zexu. Standing at the “Yuantiao (looking far into the distance) Tower” on the mountain, one can view the whole city.
??
No.1 Glacier:
No.1 Glacier is the source of the Urumqi River, located 120 kilometers form Urumqi on Mount Tiangar. It is 3,800 meters to 4,000 meters above sea level, 2.4 kilometers long, averages 500 meters wide and covers an area of 19,500 square kilometers. Surrounding it are 76 large and small younger glaciers.

Flight Planning Software
Flying an aircraft is a complicated task in and of itself. Navigating from one point to another over unknown terrain can be even more complex, but trying to do both at once quickly becomes overwhelming. This is why proper flight planning is such a necessity to any good pilot or airman. Luckily in today’s world, flight planning software exists to help speed the process along while maintaining accuracy. By entering such variables as wind speed and direction, aircraft weight, course and temperature, flight planning software programs can calculate a host of important information such as wind correction angle, true airspeed, runway crosswinds, and magnetic variation. Great aviation websites like Student Flying Club even offer pilots a free online E6B flight computer!
For many new pilots, mastering the E6B flight calculator is one of the most complicated tasks to learn. And although becoming a pilot requires learning how to use such a great tool, online flight planning software including an E6B can help speed up the learning process. Any calculation that can be made on a manual E6B can usually be made on an online version of such flight planning software. Temperature conversions from Fahrenheit to Celsius and wind chill calculations are possible, as well as density altitude, pressure conversion, heat index, dew point, and relative humidity percentages that help determine whether or not a flight is viable that day. Magnetic variation calculations for flight planning also help determine course corrections by entering the latitude and longitude needed for different parts of the Continental US, Europe, and even Alaska. In the past these figures needed to be calculated either manually or through a hand-held E6B calculator, but with new flight planning software this information is available with just a few short keystrokes.
Aside from the online E6B computer, pilots can take advantage of other pieces of flight planning software available to them as well. Airport Distance calculators are a great tool for determining the distance and heading between two distinct airports. Some of these distance calculators go through great lengths to maintain a large database of airports – not only those larger ones in class C and D airspace but also the smaller, non-tower controlled airports. This helps student pilots in flight planning by allowing them to plot several different courses from their own home airport, regardless of how small it may be. Learning to fly while based at a larger airport can be daunting, and most pilots get their private license flying out of smaller home airfields.
Online flight planning also includes takeoff and landing distance calculators, as well as complicated weight and balance charts. These online flight planning tools take most of the manual mathematics out of the picture, allowing for less margin of error. Aviation flight planning of course may also include the filing of an actual flight plan with local airport towers or FSS (flight service stations), and such a flight plan is required for IFR routes. While there’s currently no direct online way to file a flight plan, some flight planning software offers helpful printable forms that can be filled out from your keyboard and then printed on paper. Required fields and form checking help maintain that such forms are properly filled out before being submitted to the proper authorities and filed as flight plans.
Finally, one of the most important aspects of planning a flight is the observance of up-to-date current weather conditions. Flight planning software comes in extremely handy here, where most every website or application can now be easily linked to the NOAA’s National Weather Service. Forecasting is still never an exact science, flight planning tools and applications can usually come pretty close to determining near-future weather conditions. Immediate airport condition reports from across the US and even the world can be instantly collated into a central location and displayed for pilots right before a flight so they can make a go or no-go decision right before scheduled takeoff. And as satellite-driven GPS technology becomes sharper and smaller, such GPS units become more readily available to today’s pilot. He or she can fly their aircraft and get up-to-the-second weather information simply by looking at their externally mounted GPS units or even their glass cockpit displays.
Flight planning software has come a long way in a very short period of time, and there seems to be no limit to the amount of good it can do. Technology has made today’s pilot a safer, more educated airman. Planning a flight has been made easier and more error-free, and keeping track of flight plans has become a lot more manageable. In the end, as long as technology continues to advance, piloting an aircraft will continue to be made safer.
What is the procedure for commerical flights when they are told to be “grounded” ?
on 9/11 or the day after I think, all commerical flts were grounded. My question is, were the flights already in progress allowed to finish the complete flight, or were they told to land at the nearest compatiable runway ASAP?
In terms of those flights flying over the Atlantic (from the UK and Europe), if they were more than half way across they were told that they could complete their crossing. They were directed to other airports (generally away from NYC). Those that were less than half way across the Atlantic had to turn around mid-air and go back to their original airports in Europe.
